How does 5G Work_ (1) Fourth-generation (4G) Long-Term Evolution (LTE) wireless technology offers the foundation for 5G. Wireless networks remain composed of cell sites divided into sectors that send data via radio waves. Unlike 4G, which requires large, high-powered cell towers to radiate longer distances, 5G wireless signals remain transmitted through many small cell stations located on places like utility poles or top of buildings. The use of multiple minor cells is necessary because the millimetre wave (mmWave) spectrum, the band of spectrum between 30 and 300 gigahertz (Ghz) that 5G relies on to make high speeds, can only travel short distances and is subject to weather interference and physical obstacles, such as buildings or trees.

Networks. Previous generations of wireless technology have used low-frequency bands of the spectrum. The lower frequency spectrum reaches greater distances but has lower speed and capacity than mmWave.
